Were two or three are gathered.
I have been hearing a lot lately from believers quoting Matt 18:20 For were two or three a gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. This verse has been often quoted regarding prayer. This verse must like the rest of the bible be read in context. As we read the context we see that the Lord Jesus is not even mentioning prayer, He is talking about a accusation against a brother who has sinned.
If we start from verse 15 we see that the Lord is saying that if a brother sins against you to go and tell him his fault. If he listens to you, you will gain your brother ( he will repent,) if not you are to take 1 or 2 others with you “Why” Because buy the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses every word may be established. This is a quote from Deuteronomy 19:15 which says One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or sin that he commits; buy the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established.
The Lord continues by saying that if the sinning brother does not listen to you, then tell the matter to the church, and if he still doesn’t repent then consider him as a heathen.
For surely I say to you whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. ( the sinning brother is bound to his sins ).’ Why’ because if two or three are in agreement concerning the mans sins, than your Father in heaven will also hold him guilty to his sins.
The Apostle Paul also mentions this to Timothy in regarding an accusation against an elder. He says in 1 Tim 5:19 Do not receive an accusation against an elder except by the mouth of two or three witnesses.
